WHY REPLACE DAMPING AND SUSPENSION WEAR PARTS?

Enjoy a smooth ride with working suspension in your VW. The springs do not need to be replaced very often. Nevertheless, they can be damaged by age and stress. Above all, deep holes in the road or high obstacles put a strain on the springs. Look out for high-quality products that match your shock absorbers and your VW. Shock absorbers, on the other hand, are wearing parts that have to be replaced regularly. The condition of the road, the speed and the outside temperature have an influence on the temperature that the damper reaches. This can even rise to 120°C. The material must be geared to the thermal load. Basically we recommend the installation in a workshop. Nevertheless, it is worth ordering the spare parts in advance in our online shop. At Q-Parts24 we offer high-quality goods from brand manufacturers such as Bilstein, Monroe or H&R. Let our team advise you on the right parts and enjoy a comfortable and safe journey.

Car Suspension: The most important function of damping in your car

Shock absorbers and springs always work together and act as a link between the suspension and the body. Their main task is to smooth out bumps in the road. This ensures comfort and safety for the occupants. With modern advances in the automotive industry, vehicles are becoming faster and more powerful. That is why shock absorbers now play an important role in chassis technology. Despite having the same primary function, springs and shock absorbers perform different tasks. But you can call both parts together as a chassis. Together with the wheel carrier, all three parts are responsible for the vehicle suspension and form the spring strut.

How the car suspension and damping work

Bumps and obstacles on the road generate acceleration and deceleration that are carried out perpendicularly to the car's mass. Thus, driving may feel uncomfortable and bumpy. Springs are used to absorb the shocks before they reach the occupants. These transform the vehicle into a vibrating body with its own frequency. This works by tensioning the spring when driving over bumps and moving the car upwards through the spring force. The movement is slowed down and thus the spring is tensioned again in the opposite direction. Springs don't work alone. Namely, the energy generated during damping must be converted. The shock absorbers take over this task. In general, they serve the safety and health of the occupants and prevent nausea or back pain.

Function of car shock absorbers

Together with the suspension and the anti-roll bar, the shock absorber ensures that the car's wheels are in constant contact with the road. So that the vehicle can also be controlled when cornering or when driving over obstacles. The main task of the shock absorbers is to minimize the vibrations generated by springs. You will be slowed down and the bumps will be compensated. So the name "shock absorber" is not correct. Because the shocks are not dampened, but slowed down. So not shocks, but vibrations are dampened. So the correct term would be a vibration damper. These even have to dampen wheel vibrations, which are up to ten times higher than body vibrations.

Energy conversion of car shock absorbers

Shock absorbers also have a supporting function, as they convert the kinetic energy generated by the springs into heat. This happens due to fluid friction. Today, hydraulic shock absorbers are used for this. With these, a damper piston is set in motion in a cylinder filled with oil. The oil is displaced through small bores and valves in the piston and thus slows down the movement of the piston. As a consequence, the vibration of the springs is minimized. The damping process is divided into two stages, compression and rebound. Compression occurs when driving over an obstacle. The wheel is moved up and the damper is compressed. After the spring has compensated for the unevenness, the shock absorber brakes the spring and is stretched telescopically in the process. This is the rebound. This has a higher damping force than the compression stage.
