Die Steuerkette ist wesentlicher Bestandteil des Kettentriebs, der bei jedem modernen Verbrennungsmotor zum Einsatz kommt. Die Kette stellt die bewegliche Verbindung zwischen Kurbelwelle und Nockenwelle dar, die möglichst verlustfrei die Kraft des Motors auf den Antrieb des Fahrzeugs übergeben soll. Die Taktung orientiert an dem Öffnen und Schließen der Ventile ist hierbei entscheidend, damit es nicht zu einem Leistungsverlust kommt oder schlimmstenfalls überhaupt keine Kraftübertragung mehr stattfindet.
