The beginnings of the Land Rover go back to the first years after the Second World War. In 1947, under pressure from the British government, Rover designed the prototype of an all-terrain vehicle, which was built on the basis of a Jeep chassis and was cheaper than the other vehicles from the luxury brand Rover. The aim was to boost exports in order to provide Great Britain with more foreign exchange. The fact that the Land Rover was largely made of aluminum gave it a reputation for strength and durability. From the mid-1970s, the luxurious Range Rover complemented the Land Rover program. The gap between the elegant Range Rover and the rustic Defender was closed by the Discovery in the late 1980s. Although the origins of the Land Rover lie in the civilian sector, the "Military Land Rover", also known as "Lightweight", developed into a successful military vehicle as early as the mid-1950s. With the introduction of the Freelander in 1997, Land Rover further strengthened its position in the 4x4 market. By the turn of the millennium, the company had already sold over 1.6 million Land Rovers.
