History of KIA

Kia is a South Korean automobile manufacturer. It was acquired by the Hyundai Group in 1998. With success: The new Hyundai Kia Automotive Group is now the world's fifth largest automobile manufacturer (as of 2013). The main sales markets are Korea and the USA. Kia was founded in 1944. The name comes from the Chinese, where "ki" stands for rise and "a" for Asia. And indeed, the climber from Asia helped shape automobile construction in the Far East.

After Kia initially focused on building bicycles, motorcycles and three-wheeled mini trucks followed in the early 1960s. About ten years later came the first real truck and in 1974 the Brisa, the first car. In 1976, Kia took over Asia Motors and built the Peugeot 604 and Fiat 132 under license in the 1970s. In the early 1980s, Kia focused on the international markets. Initially, the focus was still on truck production, but from 1986 Kia also made a breakthrough in the passenger car sector with the Pride. The Pride has sold over two million copies. In 1992, Kia expanded to America and a year later to Germany. The Sportage was built by Karmann in Osnabrück between 1995 and 1998. And the focus in Europe remains Germany: the European headquarters of the Hyundai Kia Automotive Group has been in Frankfurt am Main since 2007.
