FUNCTIONS OF THE CLUTCH IN THE CAR

The jerk-free starting is made possible by sliding friction (slip). When the engine is running and the transmission is at a standstill, speeds are specially adjusted. Shifting is made possible by breaking the frictional connection between the connecting elements. The flywheel separates from the clutch disc, allowing the gear to be changed. The clutch also has a damping function to level out wear and noise. It dampens torsional vibrations and thus protects the engine from excessive forces. The structure of the clutch can be divided into single-disc and multiple-disc designs, which can be operated hydraulically or mechanically.

CONSTRUCTION AND FUNCTIONING OF THE CLUTCH

Normally cars are equipped with a single-disc membrane spring clutch. When you start the car, the engine starts running. This transmits its power to the wheels via the transmission. Since the engine runs constantly, a rigid connection between the transmission and the engine is not advantageous. This would mean stopping at a stop sign or a red traffic light would not be possible without switching off the engine. That is why the coupling is a detachable connection, the engine and gearbox can be connected and disconnected as required. The clutch disc is pressed against the flywheel using a pressure plate. The flywheel is mounted on the crankshaft and rotates in accordance with engine speeds. When the clutch pedal is pressed, the power is passed on to the release lever via a Bowden cable. The tension is overcome and the clutch disc spins freely. The power transmission from the engine is interrupted, so the gear can be changed without problems. After releasing the pedal, the clutch disc is pressed against the flywheel again.
