FUNCTIONS OF THE CLUTCH IN THE MOTOR VEHICLE

In addition to its main function of transmitting engine torque to the transmission, there are several important tasks that the clutch performs. Jerk-free starting is made possible by sliding friction (slip). Speeds are specially adapted when the engine is running and the transmission is at a standstill. Shifting is made possible by interrupting the frictional connection between the connecting elements. The flywheel separates from the clutch disc and thus enables the shifting gear to be changed. The clutch also has a damping function to level wear and noise. It dampens torsional vibrations and thus protects the engine from excessive forces. The design of the clutch can be differentiated into single-plate and multi-plate designs, which can be operated hydraulically or mechanically.

COUPLING CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION

Normally, passenger cars are equipped with a single-disc diaphragm spring clutch. When you start the car, the engine starts running. This transmits its power to the wheels via the gearbox. Since the engine is constantly running, a rigid connection between the gearbox and the engine is not advantageous. This would mean that stopping at a stop sign or red light would not be possible without switching off the engine. Therefore, the clutch is a releasable connection, connecting and disconnecting the engine and gearbox as desired. The clutch disc is pressed against the flywheel by means of a pressure plate. The flywheel is mounted on the crankshaft and rotates according to the engine speed. When the clutch pedal is depressed, the force is transmitted to the release lever via a Bowden cable. The tension is overcome and the clutch disc rotates freely. The power transmission from the engine is interrupted, so the gear can be changed without problems. After releasing the pedal, the clutch disc is pressed back against the flywheel.
